Donating

The Women's Center is funded through a variety of sources including the United Way of Waukesha County, government and private foundation grants, and corporate and community donations.

Donations to The Women's Center support the free programs and services offered to clients. Services include emergency shelter, transitional living, group and individual counseling, onsite and respite childcare, legal advocacy, employment counseling, Hispanic outreach, community education, child abuse prevention programming, and a 24-hour crisis line.

The Women's Center is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(ac) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code and contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. All contributions will be acknowledged by mail.

In-Kind Donations
The Women's Center and Sister House Shelter are in need of the following items. Please contact The Women's Center at 262-522-3833 if you are interested in making an in-kind donation and to arrange for delivery of your donation.

Non-perishable food and essential household and personal care items are requested. Due to limited storage space, we are unable to accept gifts of clothing, kick knacks, decorations, stuffed animals, used games and toys.

Dialing for Dollars - Don't forget The Women's Center when you upgrade your cell phone! The Women's Center works with an organization called Shelter Alliance which pays The Women's Center $1 to $10 for every phone received. The Women's Center also keeps a small amount of phones that are reprogrammed as 911 emergency phones for clients. Please remember to clear all personal information from phones before donating. Drop off your used cell phones at The Women's Center today!

Volunteering

Volunteers receive at least 20 hours of training. Reference and background checks are conducted for all potential volunteers. Volunteers are expected to maintain strict confidentiality.

The volunteer program consists of two groups of volunteers:

  • Advocates: Volunteers who provide direct services to clients.
  • General Volunteers: Those who provide indirect services.

Advocates volunteer in the following areas after they have completed a 20-hour training.

  • On-call Advocates - Provide after-hour advocacy and emergency transportation to Sister House for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault from all areas of Waukesha County. (Own transportation and proof of auto insurance required.)
  • Gentle Men - Work at Sister House providing a warm, nurturing, non-sexist, non-violent male role model for children. (Daytime, evening, and/or weekend hours)
  • Childcare Assistant - Assist with on-site childcare for clients using services at The Women's Center. (Daytime and evening hours)
  • Crisis Line Coverage - Assist in answering the 24-hour crisis line to provide crisis intervention, information and referrals to callers. (Daytime, evening, and/or weekend hours. Additional training provided.)
  • Children's Activity Assistant - Assist the Children's Advocate at Sister House shelter with games, and activities for children. (Daytime and evening hours)
  • Community Outreach and Support - Represent The Women's Center at health fairs, community events, etc. by staffing a table with information about The Women's Center.
  • Receptionist - Assist with light office duties, mailings, answering phones, etc. Daytime coverage during lunch hour and staff meetings needed. Training will be provided.

General volunteers work in the following areas after they have received a brief orientation to The Women's Center.

  • Fund Raising - Offer sales and marketing expertise to raise funds for Women's Center programs and services.
  • Maintenance Volunteers - Assist in the maintenance of The Women's Center's buildings and grounds.
  • Special Events - Help plan and organize community awareness events. There are opportunities for involvement throughout the year or on a one-time basis.
  • Clerical/Special Projects - Help office staff in a variety of areas. There are opportunities for involvement throughout the year or on a one-time basis.
  • Gardening/Yard Maintenance - Help maintain The Women's Center gardens, and landscaping (weeding, planting, etc.) Seasonal assistance needed.
  • Food Pantry/Donations Sorting - Assist in maintaining organization of the shelter food pantry, sorting donations, and packing food boxes for families.
